5.1 or 7.1 for mixing and mastering

Postby kenrob2037 » Tue Jan 23, 2018 3:56 am

Hello Everyone,

I’m interested in people’s opinions on using A 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system for mixing and mastering.

I assume most people do not have these systems as their speakers set up at home, but, does anyone know of any benefits of mixing and mastering to a 5.1 of 7.1 surrounds sound system?

Cheers

Rob

Do you mean mixing and mastering in 5.1/7.1, or mixing in stereo, using a 5.1/7.1 system?

It is no different to mixing using a normal domestic system. Disconnect the rear satellites and use the left and right satellites plus the subwoofer. I doubt if you will achieve any kind of reasonable results, especially if your room is not treated. If you don't have studio monitors, you would be better off mixing on a decent pair of cans in my opinion.
