There are some pretty cool VSTs here at this site. There's one cool bass synth (Burt), and plenty of effects, including a live-record four-track drum sequencer (it records incoming audio in realtime).

I just went through the presets so far they're quote outstanding - harsh, loud, idiosyncratic, and will mostly need extra taming / processing, but for the raw bass meat it's great.
might just be my new Bass Go-To plugin!

In order to prevent Burt from crashing, (which it WILL do if you're not careful! Remember, Burt is an angry old fart after all!) you might want to apply the Classic Master Limiter to Burt, to prevent audio peak overload (which will crash the plugin and will require a Mixcraft restart). You might also want to see what the Broadband Multiband Compressor will do, but make sure you have some sort of brickwall limiter set up so that you can keep using Burt without incident.
(It's bound to happen, so be careful what you do)
