IT'S ALIVE!!!

Postby chibear » Wed Feb 06, 2013 9:34 pm

Quietly chugging along updating Windows: A new-born DAW

Case: ThermalTake Armor Revo with extra fan in bottom

Motherboard: Gigabyte: GA-X79-UP4

RAM: 64 GB GSkill RipjawsZ DDR3 1600mhrz

CPU: Intel 3930K (6 cores, 12 threads)

PSU: Corsair 860i

DRIVES: OS Intel 520 120 GB
APPS & Files: WD 1T Caviar Black (7200RPM)
Fast Libraries: 3 X Intel 520 120 GB
Slow Libraries & Backups WD 2T Caviar Black (7200RPM)
Hot Swap HD Port for external backups & library transfers

Sound: M-Audio Audiophile 192

Issues so far:
1. Side Case Fan was installed upside down so was rubbing on the filter and blowing out instead of into the case (reversing it dropped CPU idle temp to 34C).

2. In installing the drives in Windows it was necessary to hook up each drive individually as when hooked up together Windows assigned whatever order it pleased.
Win 7 Pro, 3930K, Gigabyte Ga-X79-UP4, Corsair AX860i, 64GB gSkill 1600 RAM, 5 X 120 GB Intel 520 SSD, 1T & 2T WD caviar black, EVGA nVidea 560, Asus Xonar Essence STX EWQL CCC, Kirk Hunter libs, Omnisphere

Congrats on the new machine, it's always a blast to get one.
Your second issue: windows assigns drive letters based on what the motherboard drivers tell it is 1,2,3,4,etc. Sometimes you need to look at bios to see the given order.

Congrats Clyde. What a great build! I love that case with the headphone hanger on the side. 8)

Question: How is the noise level? Seems like it would be relatively quiet with the SSD's?

Since I fixed the case fan it is VERY quiet. I had an Antec 900 case before this and it was noisy as hell. With the fans on low you can barely hear them.

Progress Report:

I have installed all my Sample Tank, Miroslav Philharmonik, and Kontakt libraries pretty much without incident other than I forgot all my passwords and had to redo them  Luckily I tried logins on the various sites BEFORE installation and authorization.

I've started another thread on the portability of projects using libraries between computers. If you have any knowledge of others like EWQL, Garritan, Project SAM, etc please add to that thread for future reference.

As far as the computer goes: Fabulous machine with a couple of hiccups.

1. The BIOS was corrupted on the second day. Luckily Gigabyte has dual Bios so it booted from the second one :D I had issues with the other computer with this too and it was always after I had used my 2 M-Audio keyboards (Oxygen 8 and Keystation 61es). On that computer I found if I turned them on before booting the system all went fine. If not, problems next bootup. I haven't had much time to experiment with this machine, but next time I use keyboards I'll follow that rule. Any ideas on this from the more knowledgeable as to why this might be?

2. If you can remember I had several posts concerning artifacts on my last computer. I had attributed it to the old box itself. Well lo & behold artifacts on the new system too. The only thing they both had in common is the M-Audio Audiophile 192 which I moved to the new machine, so there is something wrong with the playback on that card. Time to go shopping again. Meanwhile I'm using my Focusrite VRM box as a playback device with the VRM turned off. Works OK

It was very interesting when I loaded my biggest project, which I had to freeze every track but the one I was working on on the old machine (long Soundcloud example). Without freezing CPU was at 90% and it sounded like popcorn. On the new machine, CPU usage topped out at 5% with all the tracks unfrozen. Task Master showed 7 of the 12 cores active at that time. :D
