panning tracks in submix tracks with certain vst's

Postby Juno » Tue Jul 02, 2013 9:58 am

Hi,

Certain vst's act in a way i don't understand. They can influence panning. Can someone explain this? It's just out of curiosity.

Put a clip on track 1.1, part of submix track 1.
Put GSnap Pitch Correction on submix 1.
Loop and play.
Change panning of track 1.1

Nothing happens. Why is this?
Now put GSnap on track 1.1, deactivate it on the submix, and repeat. Panning works fine.

This also happens if you send track 1.1 (or track 1, the submix) to an output bus which has GSnap on it. Like:
test submix output vst levels.jpg
Track 2.1 is part of submix 2. Both are panned to the right. The output of these channels goes to output track 1, which has GSnap active as the only vst in the chain. This output shows no panning.

I hope it's not too blurry.
Also, another vst that i tried was Spitfish. When doing this, panning to the richt just makes the sound go away, panning to the left puts it back to the middle but doesn't pan to the left. But Spitfish is not part of Mixcraft so let's forget that.
I also tested Classic Delay, which shows nothing of this behavior - it works. So it's not a matter of chaining, but of those vst's, i think.

Does anyone know why?

Spitfish has a stereo and mono mode. Try hitting that button and see if that works?

Yes, that's it, thanks! I was trying to figure out GSnap too much, should have inspected Spitfish's settings. :D

GSnap has no stereo/mono switch, so i looked up the manual again and "It requires a monophonic input signal to operate". (Important lesson here, Juno.)

So that's why their behavior is different. Thanks!

yes, some vsts have a panning effect or what makes them sound that way.
just a couple presets off the top of my head-
Classic EQ- pan left & pan right presets
Classic Delay-ping pong
Classic Chorus-stereo to cymbal, vocal spread,& possibly a couple more presets

Well, this was quite the opposite, panning was more or less gone on those tracks. But yeah, the principle remains. It's a struggle between balancing creative flow and careful, disciplined listening, checking and tweaking.

Still, where i got lost in other daw's on that second part, Mixcraft, to me, is much more accessible. Never made a complete song within 6 weeks before.
