how to connect a midi controller to Mixcraft 5

Postby CalebCrino » Mon Nov 18, 2013 11:20 am

Hello!

So I have an alesis QS8.1 synthesizer that has the capacity to be a midi controller. I've never used midi before, so I got a cable that converts midi to usb, and plugged it into my computer/keyboard. Where do I go from there? Cause I tried doing a virtual instrument track and can't get any sound out of it.
Thanks!

Caleb

Hi Caleb,
I have an Alesis QS7 and it works great in Mixcraft. Though, I am running mine through a Presonus Audiobox USB interface.

Did you get drivers for your MIDI to USB cable?

If yes, were they ASIO? No big deal right now if they are not.

You might consider downloading ASIO4ALL from the web

If yes, I am assuming you installed the drivers. Does Mixcraft even see it as a MIDI or Audio device?

Once you have done that, you need to set the track to receive data from that MIDI channel, otherwise no sound.

Good luck

I have Mixcraft 5, and the videos are geared at Mixcraft 6, so I can't follow the directions after the first thirty seconds!

Yes, I just installed ASIO4ALL, still nothing.

Thanks for the comments!

Ensure that the keyboard is switched to midi out mode and your cable is connected to the midi out port on your keyboard. When you plug your keyboard into your computer does windows recognize it and does it show up as connected in windows? If all the above is correct, check your Mixcraft preferences and select your midi device instead of the default "All Midi Devices". If your device does not show up in preferences then the computer is not recognzing the keyboard as a midi device and the cable may be the wrong one (or bad) or some other setting on your keyboard is preventing it from being recognized. :)

Just to add, I know it sounds confusing but the MIDI IN plug needs to go to the MIDI OUT socket on the keyboard and the MIDI OUT plug needs to go to the MIDI In socket... Been there, done that :(

Midi out - USB - computer.
Check your keyboards local control is on in the setting's portion. Midi out is on a selected midi channel 0-16 (any of them will work when 'all midi' is selected) . In Mixcraft, select 'all midi' for the input. Can you see any lights flicker, but no sound?
