Tracking down a mysterious beep using microphones

Postby Acoustica Greg » Fri Jun 28, 2019 11:28 am

This guy kept hearing a beeping noise, so he used a bunch of microphones and his DAW to track it down.

Well, that's kind of funny on several levels.
(My similar mystery noise was a low battery alarm on a water sensor near my sump pump well, so I could relate.... Sorta)
Stay in tune, Mark

Hi,

Yeah, he probably didn't need all those microphones, but he got a video out of it.

Yeah, my beep tormented me, but no microphones were rented in journey to the solution. 8)

Just a guess, but....
Don't know you have a crawlspace? Renter. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)
Throw your stuff on top of a previous tenants stuff in the closet? Kind of lazy!
CO2 alarm "hidden" on a beam joist in a crawlspace? Kind of odd. (Wrong location in most situations)
Crawl space that clean? Unbelievable. Not in my world!
Beer cans in the crawl space? I would be disturbed if they weren't there....

The knife however.... Wild card. 8)
Stay in tune, Mark

Late to this one. I wanted to comment on another source of almost insanity for me and the solution to it.

I kept getting this annoying ground loop noise. It sounded like a really bad mic cable was plugged into my interface. After buying an EMI/RF protection strip, checking all of my cables the noise still persisted. Really frustrating when trying to record.
Turns out is was my cable TV ground. A few weeks before that I had my cable replaced and the installers never grounded it outside. My cable routers are sitting right on my studio desk. I guess Spurious? noise was emitting into my space.
It felt so good to have that issue corrected.
