Mixer recomendations

Postby pjcorn » Sun Aug 12, 2018 1:50 pm

I currently have a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 and OctoPre hooked up to Mixcraft, giving me 16 channels of XLR inputs I can actually plug mics into. Works fine and I have a couple different monitor mixes routed to "Scarlett Mix Control" software that came with the Focusrite stuff.
Is there any reason I would want to get a 16 channel digital board to use instead? I suppose I'd have to get my monitor mixes another way?
If so, can anyone recommend a 16 or more channel mixer (new) for $500 or less?

Thanks!

I've got the Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2
I use it for double duty in that it's not only my interface, but it's the mixer for band rehearsal.
Makes it easy to record rehearsal anytime I want.

Okay, cool. That's what I'm looking at too because we practice in my studio. If I got something like a Behringer X AIR X18 Digital Desktop Mixer, would I have to buy splitters so I could fill the 16 channels on my Focusrite gear AND the new board? Or is there a trick to only have to plug each mic in once and let USB take care of splitting to two places? I use a snake by the way.

Oh sorry Eric, I read your post wrong. Just so I'm clear, you're saying that you use the board as your only interface. Do you run a separate monitor mix then just out of your board?

Yes I only use the presonus.
Monitoring goes out via aux outputs.

You cannot use two different asio devices at the same time because the asio driver for one will not support the other. If you use wavert you probably can but wavert isn't clock synchronized and low latency like asio is.
You would use the behringer board only, as an interface.

Thank you, Eric, that makes sense! One more question for you, if you don't mind.
Can you think of any reason that I shouldn't replace the Focusrite 18i20 and Octopre (total of 16 XLR inputs I use) with the Behringer X Air X18 rig? It looks like it'll put my band practice mixing and my DAW mixing in the same place. I'm assuming the Behringer works fine with Mixcraft 8 Pro.
Thanks again!

Any hardware that works with Windows, will work with mixcraft.
I'm personally not a fan of anything made by behringer, but it's probably fine.

Re Behringer..

It's certainly works OK with Mixcraft. I've switched to Focusrite now for more inputs, but did a bit of research into the Behringer company. They're designed in Germany but built in China to make them more cost effective. They are however manufactured to the highest European ISO standards.
Keep on trackin'
