Re: Upgrading my machine

Torton5 - Much appreciation for a very honest assessment. Intuitively I felt what you were saying, but my heart and wallet were hoping I'd get SOME benefit from the two upgrades. I must say moving to 64bit Mixcraft is time consuming - and you allude to that as well. That is, even if I solve my Kont...

Re: Upgrading my machine

You are wasting your time upgrading that machine, the dual core cpu is the block and so is the motherboard. Even if you put a bigger CPU in it, it wont make a lot of difference because there is little difference between CPU's that you can put in that motherboard. It's just not worth upgrading that m...

Re: White noise in audio recordings?

Make sure it's not the fridge or computer fans etc, condenser mics are very sensitive and can pickup and magnify sounds that you might not be aware of.

Re: Studio Monitor Position

They should be used as the manufacturer intended. Unless they say in the manual that the speakers should or can be put on their sides then they should always be used the right way up, you can try out for yourself of course. Pros don't mix with speakers on their sides, nobody does so I don't know wha...

Re: Mix With The Masters

Thanks, good find, I thought I had milked youtube of all of it's mixing tutorials but it seems more pop up all the time! I'll give it all a good look tomorrow when I am at the library. Mixing tutorials by experienced engineers are great providing they are relevant to the way you have your DAW set up...

Re: Headphones for mixing

If your going for the HD280's, you may as well go for the HD380 pro which is about the same cost and is the upgrade from the 280. This guy has summarized the differences: https://homestudiobasics.com/sennheiser-hd280-vs-hd380/ I use the HD380 pro's and I just realized how much I use them. You can ge...

Re: Headphones for mixing

That's another way to sonic heaven, I've noticed a lot of hardware mods flying around for different headphones, if it works why not? I also just realized yet another issue not yet mentioned. That of headphone impedance, I remember now why I went for the 598's, because they have an impedance of 50 an...

Re: Headphones for mixing

That's a good point Mark, the software only has presets for certain headphones, mine, the HD380's and the HD598's are on the list of the Morphit software. So would be good for others to check if they are interested in this stuff. Prices in Australia: AKG 701 $1009.00! wow didn't know they were that ...

Re: Headphones for mixing

I think it's hard to get away from having 2 sets of cans, 1 for tracking (closed back) and 1 for mixing (open back). The problem with closed back is that everything sounds thicker, meatier and bassier than it really is so when you play material back on a stereo system or hifi/car system it sounds we...

Re: 64 vs 32 bit (yeah, again - sorry)

Mate, with that computer you have, running Mixcraft 5 32 bit on it is a crime. Pay the paltry sum to upgrade to Mixcraft 8 64bit, you should not need to buy new vst's, you just download the 64bit versions. Your "old" computer is still more powerful than my current one and I can run 15 vst ...

Re: Microphones

If she is starting out, it wont make a lot of difference but she will require headphones as well and also a pop shield. As Mark has suggested, you might want to consider one of the bundle packs that include headphones, condenser microphone, shock mount, cable and pop shield. You don't mention whethe...

Re: Decent PC | Should I get a Soundcard?

Mark, it is the UR242 that has the DSP suite and wall wart, the UR22 has bus power and no DSP. Just wanted to clarify for those who might want to test them out. The way these units handle guitar amp simulation is to provide the guitar amps on the chip that you can run in your headphones without late...

Re: Decent PC | Should I get a Soundcard?

If I were buying an audio interface for the first time today, I would go for something that is 12volts and has a DSP chip. USB interfaces and USB microphones are portable solutions and if you don't need portable, there is no reason today to put up with their idiosynchrasies, which can be annoying: 5...
