I've had disappointing results too when using it in Mixcraft 8 (no problems standalone though). Mainly issues in syncing a sequencer patch (drops notes, goes out of sync etc).

I'm in the process of upgrading to Mixcraft 9 so hopefully that will sort it.

Both my Akai MPK2 Mini and Akai MPK249 work perfect with Mixcraft 8. It took me a little while to map the MPK249 but only because I'm new to using controllers. Akai's VIP standalone software isn't fully compatible but I can select Mixcraft's library using the MPK249 without Akai's standalone VIP so...

ps. I'd try to stick with the Impulse as it has a good keyboard with aftertouch, and the various controls do feel well made. Definitely better than my Nektar Impact GX61 (although less keys).
