Sounds like a usb cable problem to me... though 5 years is a long time to come to that conclusion.

I had crackles when I had the windows screensaver enabled (though not active!) and moved the mouse. Disabled screensaver and crackles are gone during movement mouse.

A question about the 1000's of loops that come with mixcraft.
When selecting the loop, it is downloaded and playing. But what is the location it is stored on the drive? And is it just temporary downloaded or does it remain on your hard disk?
