For some reason I'm getting about a 2 second delay whenever I press a note when I'm using the musical typing function in virtual instruments. Help?

I have an old Roland rd-170 keyboard that I've connected to my computer with a MIDI to USB connector. Mixcraft gives an message saying there is a change in MIDI devices when I plug it in, but I can't for the life of me get it to play. HELP!!
