Gary, Tom, thanks for the replies. I did indeed want the guitar(s) to sound a little distorted - perhaps I overdid this . The original guitar recordings were in fact a little too quiet and I had to boost them more I wished - maybe I should just do them again.

I use a Multimix8 USB FX as well, along with Mixcraft 6 and ASIO4ALL.
There are issues with background noise, but only if you have the input levels set too high in the Windows control panel. I have found that anything between 30% and 50% is just fine.
