You probably have ASIO drivers installed for your audio interface. ASIO doesn't share outside of the host application, but there are workarounds. My understanding is that the UR242 comes with VST3 versions of the onboard DSP plug-ins, so you should also have the option of applying those same FX as VST plugins. The VST edit window might also solve your small interface problem as well.

Try a different USB port (Stick with USB2 ports. USB3 are theoretically backwards-compatible, but can be flaky).

Are you using an audio interface to record into Mixcraft? If it has mic preamps, then any decent quality mic(s) with XLR jacks will work nicely. Does Mixcraft work with the laptop's onboard sound card? (You could temporarily try the asio4all driver to test it out). If Mixcraft can't work at all, then that would suggest a corrupt install or maybe download.

My guess would be it's overheating (causing the restart).
