Just to interject an experienced opinion- The CPU monitor isn't always a useful indicator. I learned to ignore it way back at MX 6 probably... I have done the same as Trevor- Temporary drum track or scratch "click" track. A couple of variations can be saved as a template so I don't have to create one every time. Mute the ones I am not using. But to replace it with a real drum track later will likely require the drummer to play in...

Just an additional tip- avoid having midi in both the VSTi and MX timeline at the same time.
It can cause some weird behaviors. (Yes, I have accidentally discovered this by mistake.)

To work as @jwarv suggests- You need blank clip space in MX.
