That was my solution after programming MIDI for years. It was just too much work trying to get really cool grooves. And I'm not a decent enough keyboardist so I always fell short,,until I got my bass. These days you can get a pretty decent bass from 200. To 300. Bucks. I got mine used after reading...

To be honest, I usually setup a seperate track for parts of the vocal that you might double track or treat with different effects. This is really handy if you're going to use it in several places. Doubt this will help, BUT before i baught my bass i used my guitar to record the bass, and just used the "edit audio" thingy (when you doubleclick on your audiotrack) and pitched it down 6 semitones and just added EQ/reverb etc.. to get the sound i wanted. Might be worth a try? I've tried...
