Jazz/fusion album recorded completely with Mixcraft

Post by dan_halen »

I just released my first album, recording and mixing with Mixcraft. If any of you are into jazz/fusion guitar, check out my new album Twist Resolution. I have some tunes on MixcraftLive to listen to and I have the album on CDBaby and iTunes.

Well done Dan!

Would you tell us a bit more about the production - professional studio, other musicians etc..?

Thank you trev! I did everything at my little home studio setup. I recorded and mixed that whole thing with Mixcraft 5, though I've upgraded to 6 since then. I did most of the instruments myself, except for keyboards on the some tunes and drums, which I programmed using EZDrummer. Most of the guitars were miked with an MXL condenser mic. I mastered it using IK Multimedia's T-Racks mastering program. It was my first venture into production and it was a neat learning experience for sure.

Awesome work, very nice results!

Details man!
Input to Mixer or "in the box"? Outboard gear? Interface?
Guitar gear? All mic'd from amps? Blended/Direct bass? Effects?

I am now very encouraged by your drum sounds with EZ-Drummer. Inspired enough to place my order for Christmas!
The overall mix sounds quite good on my little computer, gonna give it another go on a more revealing setup later!
Stay in tune, Mark

Recordingwise I used a Yamaha Audiogram USB interface to run my mic and direct in through. I used an mxl condensed mic for my guitar amp and ran the bass direct through amplitube. Guitarwise, I used a Jackson Soloist through a Blackstar HT-40 combo amp. I used it for both cleans and dirtys. as far as guitar effects I used a TC Electronic Corona Chorus for its trichorus setting with detune from a boss PS-6 Harmonist. I used the Classic Delay and a plugin called Omniverb reverb that sounds quite nice with guitar.

Thank you very much! Just uploaded one more tune, which I think especially captured some of the better guitar tone on the album. http://mixcraftlive.com/Danny_Brymer/

Great writing and composition, great performing, and great recording, mixing and producing! I believe we have a trifecta!

Tasty use of delay and reverb!

Really fine results with a minimalistic studio rig, I am really impressed and inspired!

(taking notes) I think I have to add a direct box to my wishlist!

And please, I invite you to provide us with tips on getting such results! The depth of talent using Mixcraft isnt really being represented in the tips and tricks forum IMO!
Stay in tune, Mark
