The Studio Today - Downsized!

Post by outteh » Tue Jul 08, 2014 7:14 pm

Went from a full bedroom to the back end of the TV room. Son moved back in (temporary  ). Have three other guitars put away not enough room to display them all. Latest addition is a 2007 PRS SE Custom 22, black maple, zebra pickups, rosewood fretboard. Have a new wiring harness coming to push-pull split the humbuckers to single coil. Latest song done with this monster (Call Me The Breeze).

#1: Yes, a turntable, used in the old days for playing music on ancient vinyl disks.
#2: An old vinyl disk (you might know this group Cate Bros Band). :D

I think I might be familiar with both objects...... 8)

The Cates bro's go way back folks. Luisianna or Arkansas maybe?

They did some "southern soul" style stuff, way before its time, and did some stuff that could only be described as some swingin' pre-disco I think......... I think a few tunes charted, I remember "union man" and an alternative "All along the watchtower" cover. Damn I think they might still be around and working, since the 60's!

If I get this right I run for OFC office again! Didn't Jimmy Thackery play with them a bit in a far away time and place?
Google him. Quite effortless and tasteful blues guitarist.

Levon Helm was the Cate Bros drummer in the early days. Thus the connection with The Band. Arkansas was the home town! If you get a chance listen to some of the cuts on their albums that didn't make the top 20. Some really great musicians! Jimmy Thackery recorded with the Cate Bros in 2006, releasing a single. Great blues history! Good stuff Mark! 8)

Just listened to a handful, more current cuts from some live recording.....
Several good tunes, but one really jumped out at me. "Careless road." Nice tune I hadn't heard before. Sounds a LOT like John Hiatt, who I am a really big fan of (and would consider that a huge compliment!)
Another "Are you happy now" is also quite good.
Thanks for the lead, I have to explore some more!
Stay in tune, Mark

Jimmy Thackery is quite the blues guitarist! I,m surprised he didn't have more commercial success. I guess some folks won't bow down to the trends and prefer to play what they feel is great music.

He continues to have a small but avid fan base. I enjoy that he keeps it simple, in the context of the song, and doesn't insist on showing you every hot lick he's got in every measure of every song.
In a word, tasteful. 8)
