Just a note,
the MFC-J825DW full faced direct print template works with the MFC-J870DW. But the firmware only goes up to H, not J, as reported on your templates page.

Update. Moving to Linux Mint. 17.2. Brother printer/scanner drivers from the official support site. The BR4 ones. Note the 4. Installed under 'stock' Wine (windows emulator). Runs under Wine. Will print paper labels all you want.
Direct to disk, at first, had a glitch. If you put in the tray, but the printer complains about the tray gate being open, press the red x on the printer console. Then pull the tray. Close the gate. Press the red x again. Then it will ask you to check the space in back. Open gate, insert tray, and proceed as normal.
