MIDI Help

Post by siannamora » Tue May 04, 2021 10:21 am

Hello, I've got a MIDI file that just won't open up at all in Mixcraft 8 nor 9. It opens up perfectly in Windows Media Player, however when I open it up in Mixcraft - nothing happens, no tracks get added at all. I'm using SOUND > ADD SOUND FILE > .MIDI to import it. I've even tried drag & drop. This isn't the only time I've had MIDI files not work properly, another time a MIDI had more than one track, however Mixcraft jumbles up the whole MIDI into one track instead of individual tracks (piano, guitar, drums etc.) I have attached the .MIDI files that are causing these problems.

09.mid
Doesn't open

MU04.mid
Opens as 1 track instead of instrument-corresponding individual tracks

Hi,

If the MIDI file is multi-track, you should be able to open it like a project file, by choosing Open Project from the File menu. Here's an example of a multi-track MIDI file:
COGS.MID
Multi-track MIDI file
(36.07 KiB) Downloaded 4 times
However, when I try to open MU04.mid that way, I just get one track. That might mean it's a type 0 MIDI file, which combines everything into one track.

I'm not sure why the 09.mid file won't open. Where did you get these MIDI files? How were they generated?

If you can get them to open the way you want in another MIDI editing program, you could try exporting them as MIDI from that program to see if the newly created files open properly within Mixcraft.

I'll pass the files along to the software developers.

Thanks for the quick response, Greg. Here is the info page from the MIDI archive where 09.mid came from. I'm now starting to think that perhaps it's not opening as it was generated in MS-DOS originally (I think-) http://www.mirsoft.info/gmb/music_info. ... =MTMzNTU= I have no information as towards how MU04.mid was generated but here is where I found it: https://speakersoundtracks.is4.site/sou ... mmeen/mid/

Hi,

I took a look at 09.mid . Looks like it's a MIDI type 2 file. I'm not sure if Mixcraft can load that.

MThd | Format=2 | # of Tracks=2 | Division=256

Track #0 ******************************************
Time Event
1: 1: 0 |Tempo | BPM=40 | micros\quarter=1500000
|End of track|

Track #1 ******************************************
Time Event
1: 1: 0 |Program | chan= 2 | pgm #= 43 Cello
|Controller | chan= 2 | contr=Volume H | value=127

The second file, though it's header identifies it as type 1 (multiple tracks) it looks like it is saved as type 0 - all the different instruments and channels on 1 track:

MThd | Format=1 | # of Tracks=2 | Division=256

Track #0 ******************************************
Time Event
1: 1: 0 |Tempo | BPM=28 | micros\quarter=2133431
|End of track|

Track #1 ******************************************
Time Event
1: 1: 0 |Program | chan= 2 | pgm #= 43 Cello
|Controller | chan= 2 | contr=Volume H | value=127
|Controller | chan= 6 | contr=Volume H | value=127
|Program | chan= 5 | pgm #= 12 Vibraphone
|Program | chan= 4 | pgm #= 18 Perc. Organ
|Controller | chan= 4 | contr=Volume H | value=127

etc...

Thank you cactus-head for the info, I actually managed to convert them into Type 1 MIDI files using a small program called MIDI File Converter, http://midi.teragonaudio.com/progs/software.htm Now both files open as should in Mixcraft.
