May I offer my purely objective comments? You're welcome to tear my effort to pieces when I publish.

On my system, the keys and lead guitar (solo bits) when both playing together, seem to overpower the rest of the mix - including vocals sometimes. Also the electronic-type toms (fills and solo) sound slightly out of context with the main drum kit in that they're a bit louder.

Overall, a grand effort and thanks for your contribution.

Ps. Glad you beat the deadline - hope I will :D
Thanks. I had a lot of problems getting a crisp vocal recording. This was my firtst attempt using a USB interface card. I used to have a Creative SoundBlaster sound card that everything under the sun hooked directly up to but it fried. When I listened to the song after I completed it Realized that the vocals where a bit "distant". Pulled them "forward" as best I could without comprimising the rest of the song. I suppose I could have tweaked the vol down on them a bit more... as for the toms, I was experimenting with creating a more of a roto type tom. I thought it gave it a bit of a different flavor. All advice is good advice, TY!

One of my favorites from the 80's! Great job on the cover. The absolute coolest thing is that you did this tune with your family! Awesome! Your daughter did a good job on the vocals and I like the vamping she did toward the end. Kudos to her for the nice vocals! :)

PS: Guitar a wee bit out of tune?
All the best,
Sam

Wow! Incredible vocal. Superb arrangement. Great performance. Very good production overall with the mix placing the instruments in almost perfect compliment with each other with vocal riding nicely on top of the sonic ear candy. 8)

Tell us more about how you did this? Who is the vocalist? Instruments? Techniques?
All the best,
Sam

Wow, thanks for all your comments :D . The vocalist is a friend from my school. The rest of the instruments are played by myself. We're recording a album to collect money for charity and this is one of the songs on it. I recorded the piano through Pianissimo (I love pianissimo!!). And recorded the vocals at the same time as the piano. I have a Behrenger C1 condenser mic wich i used on the vocals and acoustic guitar. I added a bass line with my keyboard and the finger bass preset from mixcraft. I finally added some strings, also with my keyboard. Then i mixed the song for a bit haha. A reverb send track, a delay for vocals. And on each track eq + compression. I think that's about what i did.

Pim, do I hear some gating on the vocals, or did you perhaps edit out the silence between vocal phrases?

Yeah I edited the silences out. There was really too much background comming from my keyboard. The pedal was making a terrible noise and you could really hear the keys hitting the bottom of the keyboard. I tried to reduce that noise as good as possible but it's still in there at some places. 0;58 for example. :(

I whipped this out over the last couple of nights. I'm still not sure about the mix.

this song was originally written as an acoustic duo.
Mixcraft 6.
drums are Casio keyboard for now.
bass is Shred Amp sim -Ampeg setting I came up with.
guitars are my main Epi Les Paul Custom LTD for rythyms.
leads- some parts are manually triple tracked/layered w/ main LP, my gold top LP w/P90's,& a strat w/ a tele type of tone.
vocals done w/ an old AKG D8000s.

Ok so I finally made it! :D

Not making excuses lads, but there were a few firsts here so take it easy on the old guy!

This is my first ever completed recording, first attempt at vocals and keyboards and first bash on guitar for many a year. I've been a bass player most of my life.

All done on Mixcraft 6.1 Pro Studio; very few plugins and all instruments, MIDI and vocals by myself.

Instruments used were:-

Rhythm guitar - Squire Strat through a Roland Micro Cube - Fender Twin setting.
Lead Guitar - Chinese Les Paul with plywood body  - also Micro Cube with Messa Boogie setting and gain cranked up and a touch of reverb. Both guitars went through the pre amp only, then into a Behringer mixer and out to my Lexicon Alpha 2:2 audio interface. Guitars were doubled in DAW; rhythm panned L & R and both shifted a few nano seconds on the time line. No in DAW fx.
Bass - El Cheapo Jazz Bass copy - DI into mixer - no fx.
A Behringer B1 condenser mic was used on vocals with only light compression and reverb (both Acoustica).
MIDI included Mixcrafts Ambient Strings, Lounge Lizard, Trombone, Sax, Trumpet, flutes (with Liquid Delay) and the ME 80 - all done on a Roland MIDI keyboard. The only 3rd party VSTI was EZDrummer played manually on the keyboard and the only loop used was the rain effect at the end.

Here then is my rendition of Cole Porter's Night and Day - enjoy!
