why does the track counter read 01:01.000 when using the instrument track in mixcraft 6?

Hi,
Because the playback indicator is at 1:01.000? Are you looking at the big track counter to the right of the record and play and metronome buttons?

Because you're in Beats Mode. The Acoustica help file says,
"Time vs Beats Mode
Time mode sets all controls and the timeline into minutes:seconds:milliseconds.
Beats mode sets all controls and the timeline into measures:beats:fractional-beats."
So you're at 'Measure1:Beat1' - the very absolute beginning of the song!
