Or possibly background vocals. But I suspect based on my interpretation of what the OP described, this is not an issue. But then the description of efforts at "widening" concerned me.

Vocal, Mono, centered. For now.
Also add, close miced, reasonable levels, quiet space, minimal natural room reflections.......

Maybe your voice is just too weak :P Many people want to be singers, but frankly don't have the voice it takes :?
