QUick question about manipulating tempo..

Hey.
I was playing around with a guitar part this morning, and for some reason i think
it will sound really cool as a intro with piano/keyboard/organ behind it.
My problem is i cant play piano to save my life,lol
i just had an idea (im sure there are easier ways to do it, but if i go for this one..)

1. Record the track on guitar just the way i want it
2. Slow down the tempo of the recording
3. play piano on top of the guitar track (being slow i should be able to translate it if practise enough)
4. Record the piano part
5. Set the guitar recording back to original speed
6. Change the tempo of my piano recording to match it

Im assuming this can tecnically be done, BUT will something like that sound good?
Or will it be very noticable that i have messed around with the tempo?
I figured id ask before i start potentially "waste" time on it..


Anyone have any opinions whether or not this is worth a shot, or have tried similar?

I've have found that the way you mentioned can end up sounding a bit 'Mickey Mouse' What I do is just take short sections (maybe 3 or 4 notes) and record using punch in/punch out. Tedious, yes but it can all be smoothed over by manipulating the MIDI notes in the piano roll

Hi Robert,
Are you intending to record the organ track as audio or using a controller and a virtual instrument?
What you are suggesting is not only possible, but common. But in my experience, stretching audio enough to do it always sounds funny. Virtual instruments can work pretty well for this however.
And for what its worth, practicing and experimenting is never a waste of time.
Save your original project. Rename your new projects, you can always go back to what you liked. Experiment, undo, have fun!

Yes, i meant by using my midi keyboard. What i was worried about was that by speeding up
the keyboard/piano track later it will sound either weird or bad. Just to clarify that my idea was
to use my midi keyboard to record a audio track with the guitar part slowed down.
I imagine that as you can adjust pitch and what not on audio tracks in general without making
them sound weird this might be worth trying.
I plan to make it so slow that i can let every note fully resonate before punching in the next one.
I hope that makes it sound more natural when sped up
(btw not super complicated music piece really, just the lack of piano skills makes me think to find alternate ways to get the wanted result)
I think i will mess around with this and see if i can make it work:)
