trimming tracks

i have found this problem- on all of my songs ( overdubbing or cut & paste) for me... a lot of my sounds ring out - guitar sustain or cymbal or vocal reverb... it's real hard to cut & paste w/out clipping the sound- tell me a great way to do that - i'm thinkin fade out fade in- but that doesn't really work( time consuming & levels)and ( all comp recording)it's really hard to punch in when yer the musician & the engineer w/out a foot trigger- any tips ??

When I need to do a punch in, I just record it on a different track, then you do not have to have 7 arms to do everything.
