play and record tracks in a loop

Post by andlinux »

I'm just a newbie with Mixcraft but I have a question.
I have an Akai MPK mini keyboard and now I was wondering
if it's possible to record a track while I play (and if the played track is ok) to set it in a loop.
Then add another track and do the same ?

Something like in the following link (but it's with ableton): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J6lVQzVte0

Yes, you can do that, there are even more ways to do it. But one of the best is the new feature in Mixcraft 7 called the Performance Panel. Check it out on this page. Use the dropdown menu and select Performance Panel. Enjoy!

For the keyboard setup, you should look into Control Surfaces. A midi keyboard can send any command [1] to Mixcraft and Mixcraft can be set to react upon such a command.

For instance, you may tell MC to start recording by pressing the red button on the transport bar that's found on many midi keyboards. What MC should do upon a certain command, can be almost entirely set up by you in the mentioned Control Surfaces window in MC.

I don't know for sure though if what you have in mind is really possible. The more precise your question is, the more precise the answer.

[1] most keyboards should work, but some may have a different standard for midi commands. I did not look up your specific keyboard.

Ok when I'm home from work I will try that. :)

Edit: Well I tried it and it's not working.
I assigned samples to my keyboard that's working but when I push for instance a key then the sample plays.
Then if I push another key on my keyboard then the first sample stops and plays the other one ?

Maybe a better example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9W8OEXYNNEI

Edit2: Ok, strange now it's working, they are playing simultaneous but now I have to find a way to stop the samples seperatley with my midi keyboard.

You already know this by now i think, but just to be sure: click the MIDI button

and then, you can see those blue squares, also in the performance window. They are functions you can assign. You know which one of those is to stop a clip playing? Click it, move the button you wanna use, and it should be done.

I knew the midi learning function but it seems that it's not possible to hit a button/key, the sample plays and hit that button/key again to stop it ?

You dont need midi learn for that.

Load your loop into a location
Switch to the "Sound" tab at the bottom of the screen
Click on the "perform" tab bottom left
Select "Toggle" from the "Performance control" section

Now when you select the cell it will play - select it again and it will stop.

If you want it to start and stop instantly you need to change "Cue" to instant.

I think that is what you want?

You can also do all this by right clicking on a location.

Cheers

John

*Edit
You can, of course, use MIDI learn to assign a MIDI key to the sample location - then using the above will allow you to launch and stop the sample using the same key.

Yes that's better.

But I noticed this works very well with loops but not with samples.

The thing that I want to do isn't possible I think.
Another user on this forum had the same question. http://forums.acoustica.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=18328
Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvMpbUsJs5A isn't possible ?

The can of worms might be considered to have been opened! I think that what you might need is some kind of 3rd party vst looper such as Mobius. I haven't tried these and I think that you might run into the problem of Mixcraft not being able to re-route MIDI in vsts. That is why I say I might be opening a can of worms. But you might want to take a look.

Terrible quality video but might be worth a look (although it uses Mobius with Ableton)

Also have a look at this page

Interested to hear what you come up with!

Good luck

Sample/loops: terminology can be confusing. A loop can be a sample, or a playback setting in MC, but it may also refer to the way a song or part of a song is put together. So i'm not sure what you mean here.

The video doesn't really help me because i can not see what he's doing. And if i do electronica, i do totally different stuff, too. But John seems to understand better what you do and need. :D

If it's still about Control Surfaces not doing what you want: i had some trouble assigning some buttons to functions until i found that i can tell MC how to act if the button goes up versus down. Maybe it still helps you.
