Midi Keyboard works in MC7 but not MC8

I am having trouble getting my midi controller (Alesis QX25) to work in MC8 Pro. It works fine in MC7 Pro, which is on the same Windows 10 PC. MC8 seems to recognize it because I get a message about the number of controllers has changed when I plug or unplug it. I have tried midi reset, but that didn't work. I also did a factory reset on the controller - no luck. Settings in MC7 and 8 look the same. Not sure if its a windows driver issue or a MC8 issue. I also made sure that any updates were installed so I had the most current version of MC8 Pro. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Did you select your midi device in the MIDI section of the Preferences window (control+alt+p)?

Hi,

Other programs can intercept MIDI data, even seemingly innocent programs like browsers. Restart your computer and make sure no other programs are running aside from Mixcraft 8. Does it work now?

If not, quit Mixcraft 8 and start up Mixcraft 7. Does that work today?

I restarted the computer and opened MC8 - did not work. Opened 7 and it worked fine. Interestingly, the mod wheels work in MC8 but none of the other keys do. Any other suggestions?

Here's another piece to the puzzle...My son uses MC8 on another Windows account on the same PC. The midi controller works when logged into his Windows account, but not on mine.

When you open MC8, right click and run as administrator.

Mixcraft is the only daw that knows when a keyboard etc is switched on AFTER Mixcraft has started, all others require the KB to be switched on first so this is most likely a stupid suggestion but here goes anyway just in case.
Start Mixcraft then the keyboard, the idea is for Mixcraft to tune in on the new device.
Also/or, make sure the keyboard is not connect via a usb hub so give it its own usb input.

Already tried that and it didn't work. It recognizes a change in the number of midi devices, but that's about it.

It's not going into a usb hub

I feel it has something to do with the Windows account settings or permissions. I downloaded midiOx which shows the controller is sending midi data outside of Mixcraft, so it looks like it should work.

I also read in another forum that certain Windows services could be to blame if not started or set to automatic.

I also just came accross this troubleshooting article from Alesis: http://www.alesis.com/kb/article/1664#step6

I will have to try that when I get home. I will post an update in case anyone else is having similar issues. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Hi,

Check the sound device preferences in Mixcraft 7 and also the sound device preferences in your son's copy of Mixcraft 8 and see if they match yours.

Have you tested with the same virtual instrument in all cases? If you try recording some notes, does the clip persist or disappear when you stop recording?

The link to alesis goes to a page that doesn't mention windows 10 so you probably have a similar problem as I did with an M-Audio interface, it didn't work with windows 7 but does with windows 10, your problem could be similar to mine but in reverse. Maybe you could try running in compatibility mode for windows 8 as win 8 is supported by Alesis according to that linked page.?

I've tried different ones. I have made sure the instrument is loaded by using the musical typing feature

On my son's Windows account I can record midi data fine - no problems with notes. Still not working on my account

Tried it. Didn't work.

I've also tried different usb ports, and removing other usb devices. Still not working in MC8. :?

So I figured out the problem. It seems that the problem is when the QX25 is listed under control surfaces in preferences. When I delete it as a control surface, I can use the keyboard to play virtual instruments. When I add it as a control surface the VI stops working. Strange, but at least I know a work around.

Hi,

We don't have an option for the Alesis QX25 under Control Surfaces preferences, so that makes sense. I'll have to remember to have people check that setting when they are having MIDI problems.

Thank you for posting the solution you found!
