What is happening here? Just curious.

Mixcraft 8

If I record a five bar piece of music, for instance, just a piano piece, then mixdown to .wav, it leaves a gap of two seconds on the end of the mixdown file, but if I select the five bars and then chose the option 'Use Selection' on mixdown, then there is no extra two seconds added to the .wav

Why does the software behave this way?

It's called an audio tail. It is the software leaving room at the end for effects such as reverb to die out.
