How do I send song files to another producer to collaborate?

Post by marc32123 »

I have a song that I made that I want to collaborate with another artist. He doesn't use Mixcraft and I am wondering how I would send the song to him to work on? He said to send the files but I am not sure how. Can I send the whole project file as one or do I have to send each track in the song individually?

If he doesn't use Mixcraft, yes, you'll have to export each individual track, preferably as a WAV file (or MIDI if he'll need to edit any MIDI stuff).

This probably isn't the most efficient way, but you can solo a track and then go to file > mix down to > WAV, soloing and then exporting the tracks one by one.

I've just discovered that if you're using Mixcraft 7, the "mix down to" pop up box has an option that says "mix each track to a separate file" at the bottom.

UmHm.

And in MX8 you can "mix down to stems" Choose which stems to include or exclude, choose file format, file naming convention, folder location, whether to include or exclude effects, panning, automation, and more......

A virtual bounty of options. 8)

He said he wants me to send the tracks to his email address. Do I have to use a file transfer system or for this or something?

Depends on the file size limits of your (and his) email service.

I usually place the wav stems (track files) into a folder and use DropBox or Google drive to share the project folder.
If its a large project, you can Zip the folder for file compression, but that's often not necessary if you have decent broad band internet service.

You should ask your collaborator about format preference. I use 24 bit, and whatever the project sampling rate is. Usually either 44.1K or 48K for me. This, along with tempo should also be clearly documented in the naming of the project folder for communication with anyone who opens that folder to set up a project from the stems.
Some use higher rates like 96K, but it makes no sense unless you are recording and working at high sampling rates to start with. Otherwise, it just creates larger files with no benefit.

Remember, you probably want to disable any master bus processing you are using.
And again, discuss what you are doing with the collaborator, you may want to disable other things and send "raw" files.
All these things vary depending on exactly what you are doing together.
IE: Are they recording/adding tracks to the project, or working on the mixing? Etc.
