Hi Nathan
You get the fades & transitions by overlapping the images, how you order them determines if one fades in or out.
Also if you note the automation icon to the right of "Show Video Window" you will see plenty of options in the dropdown for lightness, color etc etc. It's very easy to work with. For instance you can use lightness to fade and with grayscale you can fade to black. Just drag or set points on the automation line.
