Need suggestions!
SO, (with emphasis on the "so" )
I have a large metal trash can that I am currently abusing with a baseball bat.
I really like the way this sounds!
Do you think this would be best captured with my vintage U47, or plugged in direct?
Do you think 96k is sufficient? Or would it provide more definition if i record at 192? High fidelity is critical to me!
Oh, and did I mention I wish to isolate the sound of the little metal handle, the way it clanks when I bash the can with all my strength is rather special!
Also, does anyone know if this would sound better mixed on a Neve, vs SSL console? I have several high end studios on hold, and my label is getting anxious about progress on my next EP!
Oh yeah, I better get a fresh can for recording, this one sounded far better when I started........ It's starting to sound a little flat!

Dude, really?
You know there are a lot of better ways to take out your aggression instead of pulverizing a defenseless trash can.
Seems to me you need to just make a heavier reprisal to "Gut Check"

You know Mark, I haven't seen a metal trash can in a long time. Set up the video camera while you're at it while I go make some popcorn.

Re: Need suggestions!
No video evidence Thomas, sorry.
But I did add some broken glass. Then the entire contents of the kitchen silverware drawer. (My wife screaming at me was a nice touch!)
I got some nice samples before the audio bleed of sirens ruined the effort.
Now to go compare them on all 12 of my DAW's and see which one sounds best.....
(Shhhh, had to close the garage door and turn out the lights for a spell......)

Plugging the bat and trashcan in directly rules.Mark Bliss wrote:Do you think this would be best captured with my vintage U47, or plugged in direct?

Re: Need suggestions!
Agreed! I generally like the resonance of an aluminum bat, but for this- Using a rare zero latency USB wood model, of official weight and size seemed worth the extra investment!
But after a couple of tests, I also discovered that the U47 captured a nice "whoosh" of wind noise from the bat, so I double tracked them to be blended together.

Re: Need suggestions!
Tip: Spitting in your hands and rubbing them together before plugging in direct helps ground purple noise... But you’ll need to experiment with which daw it sounds best with.

Re: Need suggestions!
Add a little water to the can, tune it up properly before bashing it. I believe one quart equals 10 hz?

Hey, that's a good idea Tom! I was thinking of a stereo pair, but couldn't figure out how to bash two cans with two identical regulation USB bats. But now at least I have a method of complimentary tuning!

Hi,
Let us know if you come across any 443 Hz trash cans.

Re: Need suggestions!
That may require adding warm water with a pinch of dirt, or sand if you need it cleaner.

Greg, everyone knows 443 is natures way. I don't need to change a thing for that!Acoustica Greg wrote:Let us know if you come across any 443 Hz trash cans.

Re: Need suggestions!
You should probably just throw as many mics at it as you can and mix to taste. SM57 on the handle, plus a dynamic super-cardioid and condenser for the rest.

Re: Need suggestions!
Being as I am old school. I already just took the easy route and used the 57 as a substitute for the bat.

Re: Need suggestions!
It's 6 degrees F here, but this thread is really tempting me to go out there and bang on some garbage cans.
