V9 question - gain knob

Post by BillW »

Maybe this was always thre and I never knew it. I usually put the Blue Cat gain vst on my tracks to level set the volume of things I record. Though sometimes I'll use the input gain knob in the VST itself like in GTR3.

Looks like this knob does the same thing - but is it pre or post the fx I have on the track?

EDIT - same question for the drive and compressor knobs and the parametric EQ

Hi,

It's pre-effects.

Thanks Greg - but let me be sure you caught my edits:

Gain is pre

Drive?

Compressor?

Parametric EQ?

Regular EQ?

All are pre effects but which comes first the regular eq or the parametric? I would guess the regular no?

Probably an academic question (which EQ comes first) I would think "best practice" would be to use one or the other, not both.

I always realize how little I know about mixing though. I never really occurred to me to put anything but gain on before effects. Why for example would I want to EQ sound I know I'm not going to use anyway? That is, why would I EQ a guitar before it goes through whatever distortion etc I intend to use?

Compression - well, that's still such a mystery to me I guess I can accept both before and after compression. But my limited knowledge or understanding would be to put it after effects.

And then there is the debate of whether to use compression then EQ or the reverse.

Which of course then begs another question on these controls - they are before effects, but what order all together? Gain, then drive, compress. then EQ?

A couple questions, though now we're getting into something beyond the original topic

Why would use both the 3 band and the parametric EQ?

And if say one of your effects shapes the tone significantly, wouldn't you want to EQ after that effect as well? Is there a value in EQ before and after effects?

I guess same idea for compression

Hi,

The answer is that you ignore the elements you don't want to use. The three-band EQ is there for people who like it. If you don't want to use it, you can click on the little gear in the mixer to hide it.

If you have a different compressor you want to use, don't use the one in the mixer.

The cool thing is that some people will be able to get along just fine with no extra effects at all.
