Did you try the alternate I suggested? Ctrl+'
It's the single quote mark under the ampersand on a UK keyboard.

Hi,
It's actually the same thing on both US and UK keyboards: the single opening quote mark, but on UK keyboards, that little fella in in a different spot. We just call it Ctrl+~ because there's only one ~ and there are two single quote marks.
