Maping a Mixcraft Drumkit to a vintage Drum Machine (Casio RZ-1)

Post by SirLanceALot »

Question:
What's the best way to map the MIDI note#'s of a Mixcraft drumkit to an old drum machine?

edit: Solved! "SEE MY LAST COMMENT"

The Quest:
I have an 1986 Casio RZ-1, bought new, that I've programmed way over a 100 songs on, in about a 4 year period. I'm in the process of uploading/recording all those songs into Mixcraft. I used SuperConductor on an AtariST, which saved MIDI data to an exclusive .MUS file format. No .MUS to .MID converter exists because the authors of SuperConductor created their own file scheme.

First Attempt:
I've recorded an RZ-1 MIDI track into Mixcraft, and just used one of Mixcrafts drum machine kits. The RZ-1 note numbers didn't match any of Mixcrafts drum machine note#'s. *Kind of surprised me because the RZ-1 matched my Alesis vintage HR-16 drum machine.
Questions:
*** So has anybody mapped/remapped the MIDI note numbers of any of MixCraft's drum kits? ***
*** Has anyone sampled their drum machines samples into MixCraft's sampler? ***

SuperConductor Song example:
I attached one of the songs I did around 89 or so, and a photo of SuperConductor's track screen. (SuperConductor was released in 86, it was way ahead of it's time with it's block recording, dragging, copying, deleting, etc, features. The songs I did are valuable enough to spend some time uploading them into Mixcraft were I can do some real damage to them. 8) I also attached a list of some of the songs I programmed. We were no slouches in the songs we picked. (I played all inst except flute, pgm’d drums on RZ-1)

PS Casio RZ-1: The RZ-1 was also ahead of it's time with a built in Sampler and individual outs for the drum pads.
AtariST MIDI Files: Besides originals, I'm wanting to upload the MIDI from the files below to Mixcraft.
They contain drums & instrument tracks.

Why not just plug the left and right analog outputs from the drum machine into your external audio interface and record the drums into MIxcraft that way?

Thanks for the reply Joe.

Yes I can do that, and even more. The RZ-1 has separate audio output jacks on the back panel for each pad. So I could record a Track for each one. I can’t remember if Mixcraft does it, but those individual tracks could them trigger drum samples. But I have too many songs to go the analog route, and that ties me down to the RZ-1 samples.

I can always real time record the AtariST MIDI tracks running thru Boom’s MIDI translator to do the mapping during recording. I already use Booms MT software with Mixcraft, a great MIDI tool that should be in everybody’s toolkit.
Have a great day!

That list isn't a lot of songs, so it wouldn't take very long... But it was just a thought. Have a fantastic week and best wishes. Cheers :D

Yes! Problem solved.
I knew Dan and company must have pgm'd in this feature.

No need for a long description. I attached a couple of screen shots.
As I expected, you can do it in the step editor. I just didn't see it at first.

I'm a long time user of MIDI programs for music
(Apple II, AtariST, PC-DOS to WIndows) each pgm does it different, just have to spend the time to search or crack the manual.

Click on down arrow to bring up percussion list in the drumkit scoll box to select the percussion for that MIDI note.

These drumkit midi note# changes will be saved with the project file, but I haven't determined if they can be saved as a drumkit patch. Probably not.

Ok, one last comment... Duh.... I shoulda just watched the Mixcraft University MIDI Editing video..

edit: After viewing the video, it didn't help. I had searched the manual for drumkit map(s), etc.
That search didn't find what I was looking for, but the info WAS there!

Search for: CREATING CUSTOM DRUM MAPS (ADVANCED)

Other users have already posted my next comment:
the drumkit map file is so easy to create, why not put that option in Mixcraft?
I have many control surfaces that I'd like to create a preset map for.
la

edit PS The Creating Custom Drum Maps section in the manual mentions the drum map appears in "Scale/Drum Maps". I couldn't find that in Mixcraft, but the drum map does appear in the step editing window under one of the scroll bars. See Photo below:
