Dealing With a Track That's Clipping...

Post by TrevsAudio »

I'm remixing a song for a local group that they recorded in Audacity; I have 9 WAV files generally well recorded, but the main problem I have is that the bass track was recorded too hot and is clipping quite badly - a bit boomy (which I can fix with EQ) but sadly distorted in places.
There's no chance for them to re-record that track, and this is a freebie anyway; so looking for suggestions on how you would tame this.
Thank you lads! :D

Trev, there's a vst called g-clip you could try. Google it, it's a freebie. :D

Thanks Tom - I'll certainly give that a try... I also just thought; I'm a bass player, why don't I just offer to re-record it for them  (cheeky!)

Hmm, a judgment call. Why can’t they re-record the bass track.. Don’t they care? If they can’t or are unwilling to redo the bass track, I’d explain to them there isn’t a lot you can do to hide a distorted clipped bass track, but you’ll do your best. Good luck

Have you tried it in the mix Trev? I often add distortion to bass to make it cut through, so it might sound just fine as it is.

Failing that you could send the file to me. I have ERA de-clipper, never used it before but I could give it a go and send it back to you.

G-clip isn't going to do anything other than make it worse.

Joe - Yes, I've explained all and they don't seem too concerned - it's just for their own pleasure and not for release or anything drastic :D
AJ, thanks for the offer. Listening in context, it's not too noticeable so I think I'll just stick with EQing.

Is there any way you could do some 'subtle' editing?
