Issue with Steven Slate SSD-5.5 and Mixcraft 9

Post by pbognar »

I'm running Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio build 462 and Steven Slate Drums 5.5 free edition.

I've noticed an issue with this combination which doesn't occur in another "low cost" DAW, not to be feared...

If I have a groove playing in SSD, all is fine, until the focus is changed to another track, or frankly anywhere other than SSD. If the focus is off of SSD, after a short time, the groove stops playing. If I click back on title bar of SSD so it once again has focus, playing resumes.

Has anyone else encountered this?

EDIT: I've narrowed down the problem to selecting another instrument track - even the default acoustic piano instrument.

Hi,

If you're sending MIDI into Mixcraft from an external device, clicking on another track sends the MIDI there instead.

Greg,

I took my only MIDI input device out of the equation and no change.

So I tried clicking on an audio track and the SSD5 loop continued to play. As soon as I selected an instrument track, SSD5 stopped playing within a few measures.

Out of sheer curiosity, I tried the same experiment with MT Power Drums 2 - it behaved the same way!

So as far as I can determine, it's not that the drum vst loses focus, rather its related to the selection of a different Instrument track. It even behaves this way if I have SSD5 on 2 adjacent tracks. I play a repeating groove on one, then select the other track with SSD5 on it and the first instance stops playing.

What are your specs? I use EZDRUMMER2 and it's pretty cpu intensive, a few tracks with effects and I have to freeze tracks, i7-4750, 12gb ram so my old system gets jacked up pretty quick.

Hi M,

I'm running on an i5-2400 with 8GB memory.

The thing is, for my tests, the only vst I'm using is the drum vst's (one at a time) and the stock Acoustica Piano on its own instrument track.

This just seems to be a strange behavior, irrespective of work load.

Hi,

So, there's MIDI on the track that you're playing?

Or you're just playing patterns inside the plugin?

i5 2400 is really old, even with more RAM you're not going to be able to do much.

Hi,

I can't get it to happen with EZDrummer. I'll see if I can try it with Steven Slate.

Any luck in trying to replicate the behavior?

Hi,

I installed SSD 5.5 Free, and I still can't get it to happen. The groove plays itself out no matter how much I click on other virtual instrument tracks, or even virtual instruments.

Oh, wait. I guess it does eventually stop playing. But only after a while, not the minute I click on other tracks.

Why don't you just drag the groove onto a Mixcraft track and play it there?

Thanks for checking Greg.

The behavior of the looping groove stopping a few measures after clicking on an instrument track is exactly what I was reporting. This is not the way it behaves in other programs, where it just continues playing until you stop it.

The benefit is that you can try different bass sounds against different grooves, as you select different grooves to play as they loop in SSD5. Granted, this is not a showstopper, but it might be revealing an underlying Mixcraft behavior which could manifest itself differently with other / future VSTs.

Hi,

Actually, I guess the same thing happens with EZDrummer. Thanks for reporting this issue, I'll file a bug report.
