Solved, Sort of - Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio - Note release

Post by ChuckR »

Not sure if I'm wording this right but I have Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio. If I load a virtual instrument lets' say Woodwind Ensemble ( or any virtual instrument that comes with Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio) when I play a note and then release it, it stops immediately, like turning off a light switch. How do I get it to taper off a little instead of turning off immediately?

Hi!
That's the nature of MIDI sadly - note on or note off (duration and velocity too of course)
But in the example you mention (woodwind ensemble) you can just right click the piano icon and then turn up the reverb tail in the GUI that opens. Not all instruments have this but you could add a reverb plugin to the track FX to achieve a similar result.

Thanks Trevor, I'll give that a shot.
I was hoping I could just add a fx that would release the note slower

It actually depends on the instrument. While it's true MIDI has Note on and Note off absolutes, various synthesizers (VSTis) can be programmed to respond to what happens after a note is released. For example, load Strings Slow. When you play it, it will swell up, and when you release there will be a fade out. Or even more pronounced try loading up Minitaur's Labyrinth as an instrument/preset (the instrument is actually Glass Viper but the individual patches can be searched for when selecting a virtual instrument). It has a long decay.

Speaking of decay, look for a synth or instrument's ADSR (attack decay sustain release) settings for the volume specifically (might also just be called envelope). This controls how quickly a sound will sound when a midi note is activated and how long after the midi note is released the sound will continue to play.

My biggest problem is not knowing what I am doing. Does the mixcraft Woodwind Ensemble have that ADSR?

Sorry, trevor nailed it when he was talking about woodwind ensemble.

However, a sneaky trick would be to treat it like a piano and add a MIDI sustain pedal on and off. Add MIDI control 64 to your midi clip and set it to 127 (on) and then when you want the hold off, set it to 0. It's not a taper, but you could control sustain for passages and such.
