What makes this such a fantastic tone?
Unmistakably a Fender Stratocaster; BUT, where is the pickup selector switch; the tone control knob? What amp, what were the tone settings? What FX? (I hear LOT’s of reverb, a good deal of slapback echo…)

To me, it sounds like bridge or middle pickup with almost a DI full range sound - no mids. Add dripping reverb to taste.

I agree - the DI and the bridge, I tried it with an amp though.

I tried it out on an old BC Rich with two single coils and a humbucker. I think the traditional strat has a single coil at the bridge. Tone knob all the way up, setting the switch to the bridge pickup, depending on the amp - full treble at 10 and if you have a high mid dial - at 10 - bass at 0, low-mid at 0. Reverb up - Presence up. My strings are semi-new and on the heavier side (.11s) so they are a little juicier sounding - but close.

My first thought was middle pickup + bridge but the middle pickup on this guitar is a little warm and stepped on the twangyness of the bridge pickup alone

This is a fender strat with the wound 60's pickups which you can't get anymore. The settings on the guitar are bridge pickup, treble all the way up and bass slightly rolled off. It's played through a fender twin reverb, mid treble and mid bass with reverb set around 8 or 9. It's miked with a sm57, slightly off center. After that the sound engineer could have done additional tweaking and tape settings. Sound is much like the Tornados who did Telstar.

Wow thanks lads and especially Tom for that tec info. Going to attempt a cover with my modified Squire Strat - it has '56 vintage Alnico pups, dual capacitors and some other wiring mods.
Wish I had a Twin Reverb Going to have to be a toss up between my Fender Champion 20 or a Roland Cube with the Blackface settings; and some creative reverb experiments

My buddy has a twin, house shaking power, he doesn't need it and it's a waste because he can't turn it up to really enjoy it. Though the low volume clean twin is legendary in its own right. I'm actually looking at selling the Blues Jr and getting a nice 5w.

Have to disagree with Tom on the Tornadoes. Telstar, written by Joe Meek, a very somewhat off the wall agent, producer and recording engineer well before his time in recording techniques. It was was played by Norman Hale on keyboards, clavichord I believe. Lead guitarist Alan Caddy played a Hofnar Verythin and George Bellamy on rhythm a relatively cheap copy Gretch I seem to remember.

Now I would have had to agree Tom if you'd said The Shadows.

Your correct, the Tornadoes Telstar was a Claviole in the lead, other groups did versions with a guitar lead.
