Metering during recording

Maybe I'm making it out to be more difficult than it really is, but I miss a nice BIG display showing the input level during the recording. I mean something much bigger and clearer than the horizontal small metering that I see in the tracks.
If I load a VST plugin I see that it works after recording, during the mixing phase, but - if I'm not mistaken - I can't use it during (live) recording.
Do you have any suggestion? or what is my mistake?
