Can't level backing mix independently of microphone level

I wonder if anyone can help me here.

My previous setup had a Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer (similar to the Mackie 802) connected to a UCA202 USB interface and things were working as they should be. I've now dispensed with USB and fitted an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 audio card, but I'm unable to adjust the level of the backing mix independently of the microphone level. I have the AP2496 outputs connected to the CD/Tape inputs, and the AP2496 inputs connected to the Main Outs.

I've noticed too that I'm now getting a lot of feedback through the headphones, whereas this was never the case with the previous USB set up.
