I would think that the fault is with the interface not the laptop. It's probably requesting more power than a typical usb port can deliver continuously.

I'd agree, especially since the USB supposedly provides 500ma and the preamp is only asking for 150MA, except that this preamp used to work fine on my old laptop. It may be the preamp, but like most great scientific quests, once I got what I was looking for, I quit looking.
