Sudden noise while recording
I have this problem on and off for some time. I am having a problem trying to record from either records or tapes, mostly tapes. When recording from either, things will go along good, suddenly the indicator will turn yellow and make a terrible noise. Then I have to start over. I tried adjusting the sound level lower but that doesn't always work. Don't think I've seen this problem here before

It sounds as though you are having a grounding fault. Although, if it is a grounding fault it would generally be consistant. If you can restart without the noise it could make your fault intermittant. Do you unplug any part of your system in between having the noise and not having the noise?
What you can try, is to jiggle all the cable ends and plug wires in your system near the outlets and inputs to see what part of your stereo system is at fault. Let me know what you come up with.
