Articulation Automation Question

Post by JohnF »

Hi:
I own Mixcraft 8 Professional as well as Kontakt 5. I would like to automate the articulation of the strings library when playing a midi file.

In otherwords, I want to use one midi track to control the articulation of another midi track.

Can this be done with Mixcraft 8 Professional?

Send track?

Other method?

Regards,
John

Hi,

You could use the audio from the MIDI track to control articulation in Kontakt: Mixcraft University: Using Audio Control.

You could add a second lane to the Kontakt instrument track and put the articulation midi clips in that.

Hi,

How would that control the articulation parameter of Kontakt?

Audio control should work perfectly. You could even do it pre-fader and turn down the volume on the MIDI track all the way, if you don't want to hear it in the mix.

Maybe I've misunderstood how articulation works in Kontakt, but in Halion and other romplers I've used it's controlled through key switching - a second midi lane would provide the midi notes to trigger the articulation modes.

If Kontakt doesn't work that way then just ignore me! ;)

To add another lane right-click on the track in the track list (or an empty part of the track itself) and select 'Add' from the 'Lanes' sub-menu. In the new lane you can add midi clips to be played alongside those in the first lane. All the midi in each of the lanes will be directed to the instrument assigned to the track.

Hi,

Apparently, with Kontakt, keyswitching works with regular old MIDI notes in the C0 - B0 range. Notes in that range won't sound. You could enter those notes in the same clip you have your music, or use Mixcraft 8's Route To Track option* to send MIDI from another track into Kontakt.

Your mileage will vary, depending on which library you are using.
