Neutron: Midi into MC7 - ?

Post by kr236rk »

Hi,

Just plugged the Neutron synthesizer into MC7.

Mixcraft recognizes the hardware but does not register midi data coming from it. What am I doing wrong please?

Thanks :)

Did you setup the ASIO drivers in preferences?

Is your MIDI keyboard connected to Neutron or the PC?
If your keyboard does MIDI over USB, you can connect it to your computer with a USB cable, connect the Neutron to your computer with another USB cable, and set your DAW up to receive MIDI from your keyboard and send it to the Neutron. That's what they're showing in the manual.

Thanks. No, as the synthesizer was processing analogue sound I presumed it would also be generating midi data. MC7 is set to WAV not ASIO, there were issues with the latter. Gosh, this means finding another usb socket in the laptop to plug a midi keyboard into, that could be a problem.

Another reason why I loathe laptops, smart phones, pads & tablets

Will update.

Hi,

You may already know this, but we're having a fantastic upgrade sale for Mixcraft 8 Pro Studio right now - only $29: Mixcraft Upgrade Check.

Thanks, have MC8 but use 7 for experimenting :)

Just discovered my Yamaha Reface has MIDI out, so have ordered its cable.

Missing cable turned up.

usb-plugged the Reface keyboard to the laptop, plugged a MIDI-out to the Neutron; usb-plugged the Neutron to the laptop. MC7 recognised both keyboard and Neutron.

But I just got the default Reface tone - which recorded as MIDI this time.

So I hooked up the Reface analogue-out to the Neutron as well.

Turned off the Reface tone so only MIDI data was registering in the hardware / monitors.

So now I'm recording on the MC tracks not the virtual track. Getting a result. MIDI must be null I thought, so unplugged the MIDI-in. Everything stopped. Plugged it in again. Everything started.

So the MIDI input is definitely working, but the output comes through on the basic MC track-line.

More than that I don't know. https://soundcloud.com/rickemper/neutron-midi-reface :|

This is the Neutron with straight MIDI keyboard [Q25].

Am trying to get the Q25 to use the Neutron as its synthesizer - there is no MIDI interplay between either, whatever I do, either in Mixcraft or attaching a MIDI-out cable from the keyboard to the Neutron.

When I attach the Q25 to the laptop on its own, and select a VST as its synthesizer, then I have sound by way of MIDI, so I know the basic set-up is okay.

Advice please, thanks.

Preferences are WaveRT M-Track ~ in & output ~ because ASIO will not configure to the M-Track interface.

This is the Q25 alone with a VST, as you can see it is recording and playing fine - I have sound from the monitors & no latency delay, everything working great :)

Yet I cannot hook the Q25 to the Neutron, why please - there must be a reason?

Thanks.

Here's the Q25 affecting Neutron but the only recording mode for this is 'audio track' not MIDI; yet the MIDI set-up is having an affect on the audio: weird :?

Q25 has MIDI-out to Neutron's MIDI-in, both are usb-plugged to laptop.

Also found that playing back the MIDI tones affected the drone effect coming out of Neutron :-o

Not sure what you are doing but I would add a midi track and select the Q25 as the input when you arm it and then when you select the instrument for the midi track select external midi device and then select the Neutron. This should send the midi that you are playing from the keyboard to the midi track out to the Neutron. Make sure the output( analog ) of the Neutron is going to an input of your audio interface. Add a audio track and arm it with the the channel of your interface is connected to and when recording you should record the audio from the Neutron and if you arm the midi track for recording it should record the midi from the keyboard.

Thanks, will update.

I better find a MIDI tutorial for Mixcraft on the Tube before I go any further.

Cool thanks, that works. I mute the MIDI keyboard on Mixcraft because it just gets me the default tone, the interesting stuff is coming through a line-out jack into the interface.

The Neutron responds to the MIDI keyboard which is great. I can get interesting sounds from the Neutron on its own (better than a 2-Pole or Kaoss Pad) but the keyboard seems to achieve more control - like you can extend what the Neutron is doing; and it gives more scope due to the different keys of course.

Have a Mini Korg keyboard synth but it is nowhere as crazy as the Neutron.
