USB PORT – Connects to a computer via standard USB cable. The Neutron will display in your DAW as a class-compliant USB MIDI device, capable of sending and receiving MIDI information
https://images.thomann.de/pics/atg/atgd ... n_m_en.pdf

I'm guessing. It's not possible to send audio and MIDI data at the same time.

Does your labtop has a line in jack?

In the manual the MIDI keyboard is connected to Neutron, then MIDI thru connected to another MIDI device and the audio out jack is connected to a mixer.

Maybe when the audio out jack is used, the USB port then sends MIDI data.

Thanks. Am pretty newb to MIDI, not an old sweat by any means.

Both Neutron and Q25 MIDI keyboard are connected to the laptop by usb, that way Mixcraft can identify them. Had to get a usb hub in the end.

Neutron has a line-out to my M-Audio interface (also connected to the lap by usb), so I can hear whatever Neutron is doing in 'real-time'.

Neutron is able to do it's own thing (make noise) but the keyboard gives that noise direction.

Neutron has a MIDI-through socket but Q25 only has a MIDI-out, which plugs to Neutron's MIDI-in.

-------------------------------------------

The MIDI-through has potential because it means I can hook other MIDI devices to the chain, for example I have a Kaoss Pad that has MIDI sockets.

----------------------------------------

Q25 won't 'play' Neutron as its synthesizer MIDI-digitally, I have to add a vst to the Q25 track to hear the MIDI keyboard. Q25 interacts with Neutron in terms of analogue sound yet it does this by transmitting silent, digital MIDI-data to Neutron.

But the set-up works & I have control to a degree.

----------

There's also the option to use my Yamaha Reface YC keyboard as a MIDI controller, that has a MIDI in & out, so in theory the Neutron MIDI-through could be plugged into the YC MIDI-in, as a return signal, but I don't know what the result would be :? :)

Well you got it working, but it's estrange that the MIDI data doesn't go from the keyboard to the PC via the Neutron USB port. :?: :?: :?:

You're right, it definitely doesn't. The usb connection allows Mixcraft to identify Neutron as an external MIDI device but it won't accept the Neutron as a synthesizer; so, for example, when I ask to 'edit' Neutron I don't get a virtual control panel for it in Mixcraft, like I do with vst synthesizers.

But the main thing is that I can manipulate Neutron through Mixcraft with a MIDI keyboard, and get much more out of it that way :)

It makes me wonder if I can make more of my Korg Microkorg with MIDI :?:

You will not be able to control it like that inside of Mixcraft, but they do have a control software app that you can download to control it from your computer.

Hate to say it, but The Neutron (and most all analog synths) don't send midi CC from their physical controls. The reason being is that is adds a bit to the design costs to digitally scan analog controls. Moog, Korg, SCI and a few other brands do send midi CC on various models.

A good way to utilize cheaper analog mono's is to make a sound you like, record it to DAW or a sampler (capture many takes while tweaking the knobs) , and manipulate the audio from there.

The USB port is ONLY there for firmware updates.

Thanks, that explains much

So a MIDI keyboard will affect Neutron but the MIDI stops there?

Neutron is great if you like analogue synthesizer noise, & hooked to Mixcraft you can do anything with it, shape it, double-track it, endless possibilities.

Have given up trying to document which settings do what, just have 'sessions' & preserve the best bits, like an action painting from the 1950s :)
