Record output of PC?

Mildly curious guys...
So lets say I have an mp3 - or even a radio broadcast emanating from my PC, through my AI and out to my monitors. Any way I can record that on MC in real time?

Does your inboard soundcard have an option called Stereo Mix in Core Audio (WaveRT) mode?

Edited to add: basically, the answer depends on whether your soundcard supports that. Sometimes updating the soundcard driver will give you the option.

And then you could export the audio file into Mixcraft.

Hi,

I was talking about getting Stereo Mix working with your internal soundcard. For a Focusrite, you would have to get hardware involved.

FWIW: I can't add Stereo Mix to my Windows 10 Lenovo laptop... So the above is what I have to do.

I've found that Windows 10 often updates the audio driver with a Windows generic driver and Stereo Mix does not work with it. Best off using the correct driver certainly Realtek works.

Trev I presume you have checked Stereo Mix is not hidden? (right click on empty space under recording).

Trev, if all else fails, you can open Win+G (if you have Windows Game enabled) and record the clip you want.
Watch out for any system noises that might cut in.
Open mixcraft - import video from your capture folder - and just delete the video track.
Voila! You've got the audio track.

Looks like somebody's rocking the big guns

If your computer defaults its output to LINEOut 1-2 on the 18i8, you could just get two short TRS patch cables and patch those outs to two of your line inputs (either on the back of the unit or through the front panel for gain-staging). Then tell Mixcraft to use an alternate output as the mains (out 3-4 maybe?) and record from whatever your inputs are.

Obviously you'd need to use WaveRT or Wave mode, as your computer will lose access to the 18i8 if using ASIO and you'd be back to square one.


Alternately, you could get a male 3.5mm TRS to twin male 1/4" TS adapter, and plug that into your computer's headphone jack, then have your computer play the signal you want to record through the internal soundcard. That way you'd be passing the computer's audio through the headphone jack to the 18i8 into Mixcraft.

Is it incredibly messy either way? well, yeah.
