Automation vs. midi channels

Post by StStr »

Hi there,
I recently bought a copy of Mixcraft 9 Pro Studio and I am amazed about the great value for money.
I write big band arrangements in Finale and I want to see if I can make my arrangements sound more human using Mixcraft. In Finale I use Garritan's Jazz and Big Band - JABB - for most of the sounds.
The arrangements are supposed to be played bij real musicians, but I want to be able to make a better sounding demo.
In Finale I mapped the instruments to midi channels i.e. the saxes are sent to midi channel 1 to 5.
I export the complete arrangement as a midi file from Finale en import this in Mixcraft. All instruments appear in Mixcraft as seperate tracks. After choosing the right VST-instruments (JABB) in Mixcraft it sounds more or less the same as when I played it from Finale. So far so good...
When I add an automation lane to the instruments to play with the midi cc-values this only seems to work for the first alto (being on midi channel 1). For the other channels I can't get the automation lanes to work, because the midi signals are probably sent to channel 1 instead of the appropriate channel ( Alto 2 on midi channel 2, Tenor 1 on midi channel 3, etcetera).
So my question: how do I set an outgoing midi channel for the automation lanes?

Hi there again,
As I didn't receive an answer to the post I continued experimenting with this. I followed Acoustica Greg's suggestion to use the 'route to' option to route a number of instruments to one track with one instance of my VST. I.e. the track with Alto2 is routed to midi channel 2 of a special track (track no. 1) with my VST instance.

When I open an automation lane for Alto 2 I can't choose CC#01 (the mod wheel that I need), because the track is routed to track no. 1.

I routed my 5 saxes to Track no. 1, every sax on it's own Midi channel (1-5) the second alto on midi channel 2. When I hit the play button I can hear my 5 saxes.

When I use an automation lane on Track no. 1 I can choose the different controls, but they only work on track 1 of the instance. The saxes on midi channel 2, 3, 4 and 5 don't receive the controller data. I really need the option to have an automation lane for the different midi channels.

Help!

Huh, I don’t see Acoustica Greg’s suggestion... What did you do, start a new thread, and if so, why? It makes it harder to follow.

I suggest sending Acoustica Support a support ticket. https://acoustica.kayako.com/conversation/new
