Best Effects for Grungy Punk Bass
I’m putting together a sort of punk jazz tune featuring drums, electric bass and horns. I’m looking to get a big, driving, upfront bass sound. What effects are worth running a bass through to bring it out in the mix and get a ‘bass friendly’ drive and some distortion? A lot of these effects seem to thin the bass out and make it sound buzzier but with less presence… Anyone any ideas?

If you are using MX9, maybe experiment with this:
Before trying plug-ins,
Roll off the lowest frequencies to give more attack and headroom. Crank up the drive knob till it gets a little "fizzy" and crank up the compression knob generously.
Then from there you might try some further compression, saturation or distortion plug-ins, depending on what you have.
Be sure to listen in the context of the mix more than solo....

Of course you can go all kinds of other routes but SF is legendary. Just turn the knob to make him just a bit angry. LOL
Not to take away from Marks great advice, just thought I'd throw in a plug..... See that?!? A plug?!? Hah!
