Defaults to all rather than selection

Could someone please explain why, in the name of god, when notes get selected in the piano roll the selection gets ignored in favour of 'select all' rather than defaulting to 'selection' whenever a selection is made ? It's completely destroyed my sequencer corrections that I spent all morning doing by transposing the track instead of the selected notes, so now the tracks make no sense in combination.
