MIDI discrepancies effects - Chipmunk or Darth Vader

Post by creativeforge »

How to modify a tempo without affecting the playback speed?

OK, so I have a project which for some reason I set at 60bpm. Years ago.

I am revisiting the music now, and as I was out for breakfast today I took my laptop and my Arturia Microlab with me to work on some things. For this I created a new Mixcraft 8 project (which I didn't set to 60bpm but left at the default 120bpm). I know.

So you guess what happened: I saved the new tracks as MIDI and Added them to my old project. 120 meets 60 = shlow moshunnnnn...

If I raise the tempo, I get the Chipmunks...

Is there a way to remedy this, do I need a Jedi trick? I tried mixing to audio and importing that, but then I can't edit the MIDI, of course, which I need to be able to do.

Thanks!

Hi,

They are MIDI clips? You can hold down the Ctrl key and drag the end of the clip to time stretch it.

You can also select "Use Project Tempo" over on the left side of the Piano Roll.

But how do I make it fit exactly? Isn't this the drag option going to be random, having to try and fit both tempos by ear?

I tried that but it gave me a shlow moshun track. It's a girl singing Ooh Aah... so it's obvious when the tempo is slower and the pitch is lower. :P

Hi,

You could set the vocals to not use the project tempo.

The Ctrl drag thing is helpful when you know that a clip which is one 1 bar needs to be 2 bars or whatever (but time stretching audio that much wouldn't sound good). I thought since you were going from 60 to 120, it would be easy.

You can also select Time Stretch instead of Use Project Tempo and do a percentage, like 200%.

Thanks Greg, I'll tinker with that.
