Hi,
Probably the easiest way without having to worry, is to get the exact same 8 gig stick and putting it in the extra slot like you were thinking. If you want to listen to me be a bit of a wind bag, read on.
Asus vs Dell isn't as much an issue as the memory type. For example, one consideration would be the physical stick: DDR3, DDR4, DDR5... besides speed and capacity differences, these sticks are slotted differently and shouldn't be installed in a motherboard that wasn't designed to accept them.
The bottom line is make sure your mother board accepts a certain DDR and all memory sticks are the same DDR. General speed will always be determined by the SLOWEST memory stick. If you see something like DDR4-3200 that 3200 is the speed in MHz. If you put a DDR4-2400 next to a DDR4-3200, the speed for both will be at 2400. You can mix memory sizes: 8gig stick and 16gig stick for example. Ideally, all of the memory sticks that one uses are compatible with their motherboard (including total ram), are the same speed and are the same size.
There are many articles on the internet that describe the details of memory installation and what works (and works well) and what might not.

I always appreciate your input cactus, thank you. That info is very useful and I'm just about to open up both computers and have a look.
That 8 gig stick I mentioned was specifically for my Dell model - Optiplex 3050, but I'll check speed and the Asus as well.
